Willie’s reflections
Over the last two and a half years, I have been doing something interesting — simply trying to understand human beings’ behavior, how humans react to different environments and how relationships between two human beings tend to take shape. For the next eight weeks, I will be sharing a one-page reflection weekly and I hope that you will gain something from my reflections.
Reflection 1.0: The inner-you and outer-you!
We, as human beings can be viewed as two in one creature — that is; we have the inner-self and the outer-self. The inner self can only be seen by YOU and the outer self can be seen by you and others. For you to have peace of mind, the inner self has to be in equilibrium with the outer self, that is, whatever you display within your outer self needs to rhyme with what your inner self knows. The reason why you cannot lie to yourself is because your inner self always knows the truth by default, and whenever your outer self tries to lie to others a state of imbalance is created between your inner self and outer self. To achieve your peace of mind again, the inner self will keep forcing your outer self to speak the truth, and if the outer self refuses to do so; guilt sets in. Guilt is a state where your inner self is in conflict with your outer self.
When two people are in a romantic relationship, they know that they need to be faithful to their partner. What happens, your inner self registers that it needs to be a watchdog of your partner. When you cheat on your partner, your inner self actually picks that up. When you meet up with your partner after you have cheated, by default you feel ashamed of your actions. To avoid the shame, you lie to your partner that you are still faithful to him/her but your inner self knows well that you cheated on your partner. The state of imbalance between your inner self and outer self kick-offs and guilt starts to build up in you. Thereafter, every now and then, you will always be insecure wondering if your partner will ever know the truth.
The lesson here is you can never lie to yourself- your inner self will always know the truth whether you like it or not. The power of inner self.
